We simply LOVE photography. While preparing to leave The Netherlands in 2011, Steven said: “If I am going to make the trip of a lifetime, I want to make photos of a lifetime.” What Steven loves to photograph most? People. Ask him about wedding photography, event and business photography.
And so we spend a big part of our preparation budget to buy the best camera we could find. Steven chose a Canon 5D Mark II, with the full frame lenses: Canon 24-105 f/4L, Canon 70-200mm f/4L and the filmmaking lens Canon 50mm f/1.8. Now, in 2014 the camera and the lenses are still going strong and have never disappointed so far.
What photography means to us
Photography is a creative outlet. There’s no use pulling the excuse that you’re “not creative”. Anyone can push the button on a camera, and point it at something they think looks cool. It’s honestly that simple to be creative. It is great to experiment with taking photos and discovering your ‘eye’ for it. In that way, you create art. Now, there is actually a lot more to photography than just pointing the camera at something and pressing the button. That’s where you start. But learning to become a great photographer is a serious challenge. You’ll always be learning something new, have new directions to explore, and new challenges to face. And that’s a good thing! This is a pursuit that you will never be bored with.Besides that, photography helps us see details and notice the beauty around us, it helps us to truly live in the present. When you shoot you have to be aware of everything if you want to capture it. You can’t be thinking about the movie you watched last night, or what you’re going to have for dinner. Photography focuses you on the now, which is incredibly valuable!
Examples of photography as exchange or as a gift.
Steven has a beautiful portfolio of photos, publicly available for use on Flickr under a Creative Commons license. We believe in sharing, not possession and we love it if people like and use Stevens photos, like his most celebrity picture of Usain Bolt. Many news sources use this picture in paper and online media, for free. It is an honor and cool to be credited for the image on large news sites.
During our travels, we meet many people who love to have their property or event photographed. Sometimes we offer a photo shoot in exchange for accommodation or food. The first exchange we ever made for photography was with Hotel baXar, in Pie de la Cuesta, Acapulco, Mexico. Steven photographed the location, the rooms, the beach club and the restaurant. All the photos were used on the new website we build for the hotel in exchange for three months of all-inn accommodation in the summer of 2012.
